Academic Support

The Language Flagship is a national effort to change the way Americans learn languages. Students in the Flagship Program receive personalized instruction and become part of a Portuguese language learning community at the University of Arizona.

Resources Beyond the Classroom

Our instructors are highly qualified and experienced professionals invested in implementing Flagship goals and resources. Students benefit from a range of resources, including one-on-one tutoring, regular meetings with their instructors and peer language partners.

Peer Tutoring

Portuguese Flagship students enjoy the benefit of free weekly one-on-one peer tutoring as a core component of the Flagship Program. These two-hour sessions with native speakers are designed to help you refine your language skills, providing personalized attention and feedback. This unique opportunity allows you to enhance your proficiency and achieve your language learning goals effectively.

Office Hours Meetings

Portuguese Flagship students are encouraged to schedule one-on-one meetings with their instructors every other week. In these sessions, students have the freedom to choose the conversation topics, fostering stronger relationships with their instructors and gaining greater control over their learning process.

Buddy Program

PFS students are paired with peers who have complementary levels of proficiency in Portuguese and share common interests, such as music, travel, literature, popular culture, and career aspirations. This initiative aims to provide all PFS students with a strong support network from the beginning of their studies, assisting them throughout their Portuguese language learning process.

Extracurricular Activities

Portuguese Flagship students are highly encouraged to participate in numerous activities beyond the classroom. These events and activities offer invaluable opportunities for students to connect with peers beyond their immediate cohort, interact with scholars and Portuguese-speaking visitors, learn more about their research or work, and broaden their cultural knowledge. Moreover, these events and activities allow students to practice their Portuguese in social settings. Regular gatherings include social events, a film festival, special lectures in Portuguese by visiting scholars, film screenings, and a wide range of other activities on campus and in the community.
